One of the most common questions about the community is how it got its name. Originally named Smithville, the town changed its name on July 28, 1884, to avoid postal confusion with another Pennsylvania post office. Local history offers a few popular theories for the pick:

Named in honor of Grover Cleveland’s 1884 presidential election victory.
Derived from the mile marker on the local Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad line.
